The Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a serious injury crash Sunday afternoon involving two Norwalk motorcyclists on Shawmill Road.

Patrick E. Smith, 20, 1293 S. Norwalk Road, and Dylan R. Flew, 20, 6 Dudley Blvd., both were traveling with a group of riders east on Shawmill Road less than one-quarter mile west of U.S. 250 when Smith lost control of his 2006 Honda CBR 600, troopers said.

Smith then swerved to the left and made contact with Flew's 2006 Suzuki CRX 1000 which was to the left of Smith's motorcycle, troopers said. Both drivers were ejected from their bikes, which went off the left side of the road.

A medical helicopter took Flew, who didn't have a helmet, to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries. A hospital spokeswoman said Flew is listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

North Central EMS transported Smith, who was wearing a helmet, to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, also with incapacitating injuries. He has been treated and released, Fisher-Titus spokeswoman Johnna Young said.

Lt. Gregory Greggila said a nearby motorist who was out of gas reported hearing the two motorcyclists accelerating. Greggila said he assumed Flew and Smith "were moving at a high rate of speed," but said that hasn't been verified.

Drugs and alcohol aren't considered factors at this time, Greggila said. Authorities with the Erie County Sheriff's Office and Milan Township Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene. No citations have been issued.
