The girl who was attacked by her stepfather in what Scottsdale police described as one of the most gruesome domestic violence scenes they’ve ever seen has died of her injuries.

Seventeen-year-old Meggie Le was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m. Thursday as a result of multiple wounds sustained in the attack that also killed her 44-year-old mother, Catherine Howe, and wounded her 18-year-old brother, Richard Le.

Though wounded by gunshots, the brother fought off the stepfather, Lee Howe. Police said they believe Richard Le confronted his stepfather in the kitchen, where it appeared he killed the 54-year-old man with a kitchen knife after Lee Howe went on a rampage in the house with two handguns, first killing the mom and then critically wounding the daughter.

The young man, Richard Le, works at a north Scottsdale Safeway grocery store near North Pima Road and East Thompson Peak Parkway.

Le’s coworkers have started raising money for him. Jars sat at each cash register with a message asking customers for help: “Richard Le, a deli clerk and Eddie V’s employee, tragically lost his family Wednesday night. We are accepting donations to help cover funeral expenses.”

The attack took place throughout the house at 8383 E. Nightingale Star Drive, in the gated Cartona subdivision nearly 4 miles southeast of Carefree.

Police said the mother was the first to die after her husband shot her in a bedroom.

“We do not believe (the children) heard their mother being killed,” Clark said.

The man then went to his stepson’s room, where he fired more shots. The stepson managed to escape and made it to his sister’s room, where the pair barricaded themselves in. The first 911 call was made from that room.

“That’s where police heard the violent encounter, when the stepfather forced the door open,” Clark said of the taped call.

Once the man got into the room, he fired several times at the girl. Her brother fought back with a small knife but was shot several times. Even so, he again managed to escape from his stepfather. The brother ran to a neighbor’s house to get help.

Out of concern for his mother and sister, he then re-entered the house, where he discovered his mother’s body and found his sister clinging to life. He confronted his stepfather in the kitchen, where Clark said it appears the son killed his stepfather with a kitchen knife.

“The stepfather received fatal injuries from that confrontation,” Clark said.

Police still don’t know what caused the attack. Clark said there have been no calls for police at the home in the past year.

“The motives we’re going to find out later,” he said. “At this point, we’re trying to find out what happened.”

The house belongs to Catherine Howe, according to documents from the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office. She bought the 4,700 square-foot house in June for more than $1.2 million.

Residents described their neighborhood as quiet.

One neighbor, who declined to give her name, said she was surprised when she found out what happened.

“I’ve never seen the police around here. We haven’t had any action since I’ve moved here,” she said. “The biggest commotion we’ve had here is our landscaping.”

The neighbor added that “a lot of nice couples,” who usually play Bunco together once a month, live in the area. However, she had never met the people in the house where the dispute took place — they were the most recent additions to the neighborhood, and moved in about six months ago, she said.
