Police still are investigating the circumstances of a street fight Sunday morning that led to the fatal stabbing of a 31- year-old Fremont man.
Jonathan David Sanft died early Sunday from multiple stab wounds to the chest and back in what police say appears to be a random street fight started by two groups of people who did not know each other.
"It was first reported as a possible gang-related fight," said Lt. Kelly Musgrove. "But it was more of a fluke. They had never met each other. Words were exchanged and that's how it started. They just happened to cross paths."
Police spent Sunday and Monday interviewing witnesses as they pieced together the events that prompted the deadly fight, which began just after 1:15 a.m. in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven store on Alvarado-Niles Road near Almaden Boulevard.
