On Monday evening, Albert Gatica and Heather Weed exchanged "I love you" messages on their MySpace pages.

On Wednesday, Gatica, 19, was behind bars, accused of beating his 18-year-old girlfriend to death.

Weed was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m. Wednesday at Huguley Memorial Medical Center, not long after Gatica and a friend drove her to the hospital.

When questioned by medical staff about Weed's injuries, Gatica acknowledged that they had fought.

Later, police went to Gatica's house in the 1300 block of Cameo Drive and found blood. Officers got a search warrant and found more evidence and arrested Gatica, homicide Sgt. J.D. Thornton said.

"The investigation revealed that a violent assault took place both inside and outside the residence, and we have reason to believe that she was also sexually assaulted," Thornton said.

Gatica faces a charge of capital murder. He remained in the Mansfield Jail on Wednesday night with bail set at $750,000.

According to online court records, Gatica was free on bail in a Crowley case involving possession of a controlled substance. That case is pending, records show.
