A 15-year-old Oceanside High School student was killed over the weekend when he tried to run across the tracks in front of a speeding Amtrak train.
Graham Suchman was hanging out with a group of about 20 teenagers Saturday night at the Wisconsin Avenue railroad crossing just south of the Oceanside train station, NBC 7/39 reported. Just before 10 p.m., he and a group of friends played "chicken" with a train.
"I saw these kids running, and I saw the train coming," witness Danielle Corbin said. "They were just trying to run past it, but he had second thoughts. He tried to stop and it pulled him in."
The northbound train was going about 50 mph when it hit Suchman, who was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., according to the San Diego Medical Examiner's officer.
Sunday, Suchman's friends returned to the accident site and set up a makeshift memorial.
