Human remains, found May 16 in Marshall, Ill., are the remains of Terre Haute resident Nikolle Steelman, said a source close to the investigation.

That source, who asked not to be identified, said Steelman's unclothed remains were found scattered in a hay field northwest of Marshall.

The source said her clothing was not discovered in the hay field.

Authorities sent Steelman's remains to a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist in St. Louis to determine other specific information, including the cause of death, the source said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case, police said.

A landowner, who was mowing the hay field, discovered Steelman's skeletal remains in May.

Authorities performed multiple searches in an effort to discover evidence and her remains.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Kelly Hodge said in May that the remains had been there between three months and a year.

Steelman, 26, was reportedly last seen between 10 a.m. and 1:50 p.m. March 5 at the Towne South Plaza on Terre Haute's south side.

Steelman's mother, Katana Fulford, told the Tribune-Star on March 15 that she felt her daughter was dead.

Fulford has heard numerous rumors about her daughter and her activities before her disappearance, she said in March. Based on the things her daughter said to her before her disappearance, Fulford knew something was wrong, she said.

Steelman was dropped off in the parking lot at Gander Mountain while on her way to a doctor's appointment. Steelman didn't show up for the appointment, police said.
