Police have charged 19-year-old Clinton resident Dennis Knapp with the death of a young Madison woman who was killed in a violent car crash early Saturday morning.

Knapp, 19, of North High St., is charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. He could face up to 10 years in prison on the manslaughter charge, according to Sgt. Joseph Flynn of the Clinton police department.

Knapp was being held by Clinton police Wednesday afternoon on $200,000 bond pending arraignment this morning in Middletown Superior Court.

The crash early Saturday morning took the life of 19-year-old Kirsten Meyer of 106 Beechwood Drive, Madison, a 2007 graduate of Daniel Hand High School. Three other young men were in the car when it swerved out of control around a curve on Nod Road shortly before 2:50 a.m.

Police said they found a large bottle of brandy in the car, and that Knapp's blood alcohol level was .13 percent. The limit for anyone under the legal drinking age of 21 is .02.
