Charges are pending against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man found at 9800 Pagewood about 10:15 a.m. on Friday (Jan. 11).

The suspect, Jason Bernard Russell (b/m, DOB: 5-19-77), is facing charges of murder and aggravated sexual assault. Russell is accused in the killing of Deval Andrews, 30, who suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers C.T. Hufstedler and A.J. Palos reported:

The suspect and victim were roommates at the townhomes at 9800 Pagewood.

Andrews, his girlfriend and Russell had gone out to celebrate the woman's birthday and arrived back to the townhomes about 3:30 a.m. on Friday. At that time, Andrews told his girlfriend and Russell that he was going to stay inside their vehicle, parked in a garage, due to his intoxicated condition.

A short time later, Russell went out to the garage with a weapon. He returned inside the townhome and went upstairs where he sexually assaulted the woman at gunpoint. Hours later, the woman was able to escape from the residence. As she was leaving in her vehicle, she noticed Andrews in the backseat and that he had been shot.

Paramedics were called and pronounced Andrews dead at the scene.

HPD SWAT officers were called when Russell refused to answer the door at the townhome. Shortly after their arrival, suspect Russell surrendered to SWAT officers without further incident.
