A 14-year-old San Leandro girl was killed early today when a speeding car full of teenagers spun out of control on Interstate 680 near Pleasanton, slammed into the center divider and was struck by a pickup truck, authorities said.

Rachel Vargas, one of five passengers in the 2003 Ford Taurus, was killed instantly when the pickup plowed into the car at 2:45 a.m., said Officer Steve Creel of the California Highway Patrol.

Another passenger, a 19-year-old man from Petaluma, was attempting to get out of the car and suffered moderate injuries when he was struck by the truck, Creel said.

The car's driver, 19-year-old Drori Levi of San Leandro, lost control on northbound I-680 just south of Bernal Avenue and slammed into the center divider, authorities said.

"He was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed and came up on traffic and braked to swerve," Creel said. "Unfortunately, his car went into the center median ... and rotated to the right side, then deflected back out into the freeway lanes."

The Taurus came to a stop in the two left lanes, authorities said. A 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by 23-year-old Jonathan Schrader then slammed into the car, killing Vargas, who was in the back seat, the CHP said.

The truck also struck the unidentified 19-year-old man from Petaluma, who was getting out of the car. The other three teenagers had already escaped and were standing at the center divide.

The 19-year-old was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley with moderate injuries to his head and hip, authorities said. One other youth, a 19-year-old from San Leandro, suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.

Creel said investigators believe Vargas was trying to get out of the Taurus as well, but may have been unable to because of the damage it suffered when it hit the median divider.

The pickup was struck by a 2001 Ford F-150 truck after hitting the Taurus, but no one was injured in that crash.

The CHP is investigating the crash. No arrests have been made.
