Hugo Damian Maldonado, 17, died on Friday at his Grayson Avenue home after suffering a seizure.
When police were called to the home at 4:50 p.m., Maldonado was not breathing, said police officer Justin Tharp.
Officers and Fire Chief Kevin Twohey were unable to revive him through CPR.
Paige Rios, Maldonado's aunt and a St. Helena High School teacher, said Maldonado suffered several seizures when he was an eighth-grader at RLS Middle School. The problem was never diagnosed, but he was placed on medication as a precaution, Rios said.
According to the Napa County Coroner's office, an autopsy has been performed, but the cause of death is undetermined pending toxicology results, which should be available in about three weeks.
Maldonado went to St. Helena schools until his freshman year, when he started attending Justin-Siena High School in Napa. After graduating this June, he was planning to attend St. Mary's College.
At Justin-Siena, Maldonado was active in soccer, tennis, and especially on the mock trial team. While he hadn't decided on a career path, Rios said he was considering practicing law.
He also participated in Los Ninos International in Tijuana, a program dedicated to the health of children and their families.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Helena Catholic Church. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bank of America's Damian Maldonado Memorial Fund, which will benefit Los Ninos International.
