A spokesperson for Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah confirmed that Jamie Carter, 22, passed away Wednesday evening. Carter was the third Georgia Southern University student to die following an accident Sunday afternoon.
Carter, and her two friends Melissa Eustice, 20, and Jessica Fulmer, 21 were involved in the roll-over accident on Interstate 16 near Metter. Eustice and Fulmer were pronounced dead Sunday.
"She passed this evening," said Mona Bridges. Bridges said she was a family friend who had known Carter since she was 14. "The family really appreciates all the support from Statesboro. It's been very touching."
Bridges said she was with Ellen Carter, Jamie's mother, but Carter declined an interview.
Carter reportedly underwent surgery Wednesday, but details on the procedure were not released by the hospital.
The three Kappa Delta sorority sisters were driving back from an engagement party in Atlanta Sunday when they were involved in the accident on I-16 near the Excelsior exit, a few miles east of Metter. They were heading back to Georgia Southern University.
Witnesses told Georgia State Patrol Senior Trooper David H. Averitt they saw a white car, possibly a Ford Taurus, merge into the right lane in front of the red Toyota 4Runner one of the girls were driving.
The vehicles did not make contact, but the 4Runner left the roadway and overturned several times, ejecting all three women. None were wearing seat belts, he said. Eustice and Fulmer were killed.
Several students and others held a candlelight vigil Monday evening on "Greek Row" near the university campus.
Averitt said troopers are seeking information regarding the driver of the white car that may have caused the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call Averitt at (912) 688-6999.
