A young Woburn man lost his life and four others were injured in a one-car crash on Interstate 95 South just north of Interstate 93 early Sunday morning.

Michael F. Lutz, 22, died when the driver of the 1993 Ford Escort in which he was a passenger lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over and came to a rest on the right shoulder of the roadway facing oncoming traffic about 1:45 a.m., according to State Police. He was declared dead at the scene.

The driver, Vincont J. Marquardo, 22, of Woburn, suffered serious injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle and pinned beneath it when it came to rest. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a preliminary investigation by Trooper Mark Wheeler.

Three passengers -- 21-year-old Michael A. Wheaton of Stoneham, 21-year-old Timothy W. Keane of Woburn and 22-year-old Brian J. Walsh Jr. of Woburn, were wearing seatbelts and suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were able to pull Marquardo from beneath the Ford.

Marquardo and Keane were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance. Wheaton and Walsh were transported to Lahey Clinic by ambulance.

Although speed appears to have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of The Middlesex County State Police Detective Unit, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Woburn Fire Department and MassHighway assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation and the vehicle recovery, the two right lanes of Route 95 South were closed for approximately two hours after the accident.
