The details of the death of an 18-year-old Manning native outside of Camden late Tuesday night are still sketchy.

Benjamin Singleton, 18, formerly of Manning and a 2007 graduate of Manning High School, was lying on S.C. 34, east of Camden, about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when his body was struck by a single vehicle.

"All I can say right now is we're working a death," Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers said Wednesday afternoon. "He was lying in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle. There are some underlying questions that we're trying to clear up."

Fellers said he wants to find out why Singleton's body was in the roadway.

Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the investigation into Singleton's death was "not finished."

When asked if charges were pending on the driver of the vehicle that struck Singleton, Robinson said "the investigation is continuing."

According to authorities, Singleton was living in Columbia when he died. His parents, of Manning, are deceased.

Singleton was a good all-around athlete at Manning High School, MHS Athletic Director Robbie Briggs said Wednesday.

"He started two years at cornerback for us," Briggs said. "He also played basketball and ran track."

Briggs called Singleton "a great kid" who took his mother's death in his junior year of high school "really tough."

"I took him home every day for two years," Briggs said. "I talked to him over Christmas break and he was wanting some film of his football senior year. He wanted to try walking on at Benedict."
