A Kingston teenager was killed and five other local residents were injured when the car they were riding in rolled over three times on a North Carolina highway early yesterday morning.

more stories like thisLaura Guidoboni, 15, a sophomore at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, was riding in a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser when the driver, Devin Rebello, 17, also of Kingston, lost control while driving on Interstate 95 North in Lumberton, N.C., at about 4:40 a.m., said North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sergeant Anthony Parrish.

"They ran off the road to the left," said Parrish. "The driver steered back to the right and overcorrected, running off the road onto the right shoulder, and when she steered back to the left, they a began broadside rollover."

Rebello was traveling 80 miles per hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone, Parrish said. She was summonsed to return to a North Carolina court for a charge of misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Lauren Smolic, 16, also of Kingston, was taken to Duke University Medical Center with critical injuries.

Jonathan Guidoboni, 17, of Kingston and Ryan Pittsley, 18, of Plympton sustained minor injuries.

Laura Guidoboni's father, Mark Guidoboni, 49, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. He was the adult chaperone on a trip in which the group had traveled to Key West, Fla., the Patriot Ledger of Quincy reported.

At Notre Dame, teachers informed students of Laura Guidoboni's death and a prayer service was held for her yesterday afternoon, according to a statement by the academy's president.

"We are all devastated by the loss of Laura, but we are trying to keep the school as normal as possible," Sister Barbara A. Barry said in the statement, posted on the school website.

Staff from the school's crisis team were available to help students, Barry said.
