A 14-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Richmond on Friday night was identified today as Kareem Dawson, who also lived in the city.

Police said they found the boy -- who had suffered a single gunshot to the upper torso -- on the sidewalk in the 300 block of South Seventh Street.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said they saw a man running from the area, but officers were not sure whether he was involved, Richmond police Lt. Shawn Pickett said. The shooting happened about 8 p.m.

About 30 minutes earlier, an 18-year-old woman was shot and killed as she stood among a large group of people outside a recreational center on Silver Avenue, near North First Street in unincorporated North Richmond.

She was identified as Janae Weathers of Richmond, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

Men in a Dodge Intrepid fired at least 20 shots from an assault rifle and handgun at the crowd and Weathers was apparently the only person hit, said Lt. Jeff Jennings of the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office.

The woman's friends made a "mad dash" for Doctors Medical Center San Pablo, where Weathers was pronounced dead, Jennings said.

Police were still investigating both shootings today.
