A woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a teenage girl on Chicago's West Side over the weekend, police said Thursday.

Tennille Tyson, 20, of the 1000 block of North Waller Avenue sought help from a local pastor before turning herself in to police Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of Kadeidrah Marsh, 15.

Tyson is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at noon in the Cook County Criminal Courts Building, police said.

Marsh was shot in the chest about 9:15 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of North Waller in the city's South Austin neighborhood. A female "approached the victim and fired one shot at her," Officer Amina Greer said.

Marsh of the 3500 block of West Polk Street was pronounced dead at 9:44 p.m. in Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police have said Marsh's slaying was thought to have stemmed from an argument with Tyson.

Tyson came to the New Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church shortly afternoon Wednesday, said Rev. Marshall Hatch, a pastor at the church.

"Her family and friends convinced her that this was the best thing to do," Hatch said. "She was very distraught, very scared."

The woman was taken into custody about 12:45 p.m.

Marsh was one of eight public-school children -- including a 7-year-old -- shot over the weekend, Chicago Public Schools Chief Arne Duncan said Monday. Three of those students died, making a total of 17 schoolchildren killed this year, Duncan said.

According to a Tribune tally, the deaths are on par with the 18 students killed in the same period last year, when a record 27 students enrolled in Chicago public schools died as a result of violence.
