A 25-year-old North Hills woman was killed early Friday morning when her car slammed into a median light pole on the eastbound side of Sunrise Highway near Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, the Nassau police said.
Mary Pogiatzis, 25, of Yale Drive, North Hills, was at the wheel of a 2000 two-door Pontiac that bent around the light pole and left the front end in shreds with the engine thrown free from the frame.
A police report said she drove west toward "the intersection of Old Sunrise Highway where she failed to negotiate a turn and her vehicle continued in a straight direction onto the median striking a utility pole."
After the 2:43 a.m. accident Pogiatzis was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 7:10 a.m. Her name orginally was withheld pending family notification.
Seventh Squad detectives will continue to investigate the accident, which forced the closure of westbound lanes during the morning commute.
