Police on Monday continued to investigate a vehicular homicide that happened during the weekend.

Potter-Randall Special Crimes is investigating the death of Andrew Santos, 18, as a homicide, coordinator Lt. Gary Trupe said. He died in a crash that was reported Sunday about 2 a.m.

Two people were interviewed as persons of interest, but no arrests were made Monday, Trupe said.

Santos died at the scene after the Nissan Sentra he was driving was reportedly rammed into a concrete column by a Ford Expedition at the Amarillo Federal Credit Union, 6100 W. Interstate 40. A 17-year-old passenger was taken to a the hospital suffering from internal injuries.

Trupe could not say whether road rage played a role in the incident.

"We suspect that that could be an element," Trupe said. "We've taken it into consideration."

Trupe didn't believe the passenger's injuries were life-threatening, but the passenger remains in guarded condition.

Authorities are unsure of a motive for the attack because the passenger has not been able to give police a complete statement, Trupe said.

Santos was one of two Caprock High School students who saved a 93-year-old woman from a house after it exploded in October 2006.

He and Alex Ballin rushed to a house on the 3100 block of South Fairfield Street when they heard an explosion and saw flying debris from the school's parking lot.

Inside, Santos and Ballin found Vivian Thomas wedged between a collapsed wall and a refrigerator. They pulled her to safety and later were honored by the Amarillo Fire Department for their bravery.

Thomas, however, died about a week later from injuries she sustained in the fire.

Trupe said authorities have been working with bank officials to see if surveillance cameras were pointing at the parking lot at the time of the incident.

Witnesses told police they saw two people running northbound from the scene.

Emergency officials used the Jaws of Life to extract Santos and his passenger from the vehicle. The Ford Expedition had been reported stolen from the 1600 block of South Ong Street about two hours after the crash, according to police.
