A 17-year-old netballer died last night after collapsing on court before a grand final match in Warrnambool.

Emma McVilly fell to the ground during a warm-up drill, triggering frantic resuscitation attempts.

The stadium was evacuated and the game called off.

The girl was transferred by ambulance to hospital as paramedics continued to perform CPR.

South West Healthcare spokeswoman Suzan Morey confirmed late last night that Ms McVilly had died.

Colac and District coach Julie Monaghan said players and support staff were in shock.

One of the first to assist Ms McVilly at the stadium was South West Healthcare emergency services director Qalo Sukabula, one of the match umpires. He immediately ran to her assistance.

Assisted by four nurses from the crowd, Dr Sukabula attempted to resuscitate Ms McVilley until the paramedics arrived at 8.34pm.

One of the paramedics and a nurse were still performing CPR as Ms McVilley was loaded into an ambulance at 9.10pm.

Geelong Flyers team manager Michelle Gerdtz told the Geelong Advertiser she was devastated to hear of Ms McVilley's death.

Ms Gerdtz said she was a "super-talented netballer" and a lovely girl.

She told the newspaper that Ms McVilley's had completed the pre-season with the club and was due to play her first game with them when the season began in April.

Ms Gerdtz said the club had been thrilled to get Ms McVilley on board because she had displayed an "enormous" amount of talent.

The news would send shockwaves through the club, she said.

Ms McVilly played for Simpson in the Colac and District Football League Netball Association competition and was also training with Geelong Flyers in the Victorian State League.

Netball Victoria said the grand final was not likely to be played until after Easter.
