Columbus police arrested Dante A. Jones, 22, and charged him with murder yesterday following the early morning killing of 21-year-old Todd D. Lockett.

Gunfire erupted after several men who were fighting outside the Gateway parking garage at 75 E. 11th Ave. near the Ohio State campus moved inside the garage, Columbus police said.

Lockett was shot once in the head at about 2:20 a.m. He was taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where he died.

Jones, of 2068 Woodland Ave., is expected to be arraigned this morning.

He was released from prison in February after serving time for a felony drug charge out of Scioto County, according to state records.

Lockett was the second of three boys who were adopted by relatives at an early age. Lisa Walton, an aunt who said she practically raised the boys, called Lockett the jokester of the family.

"Everybody in our family loved him," Walton said. "He was just one of those types."

Walton said her nephew worked for a railroad and had been trying to get into college. She said he loved gadgets and new technology, and figured he wanted to study something like that.

He had also just recently moved into a North Side apartment.

Detectives working on the case were not available yesterday afternoon to discuss further details. Police did not provide a current address for Lockett.
