A Newburgh man stabbed in the neck early Sunday died Monday night at Deaconess Hospital.

Thomas F. Walls, 20, was pronounced dead around 8:50 p.m., Vanderburgh County Coroner Don Erk said. An autopsy will be performed today, Erk said.

Andrew C. Rogers, 20, of 1403 King Arthur Court, faces preliminary charges of aggravated battery with a knife. The charge will be amended to murder today, police said. Rogers is scheduled to appear in court again Thursday for prosecutors to file formal charges.

Rogers was arrested on a warrant late Sunday and appeared in court for the first time Monday.

During his first court appearance on Monday morning, Rogers' bond was set at $2,500 cash. However court records show that bond was increased later in the day to $100,000 cash.

According to Evansville Police detective Brent Melton's probable-cause affidavit, Rogers' inflicted a wound on Walls that "created substantial risk of death."

Melton said officers were called to the Foxfire Apartments at 358 S. Rosenberger Ave. for a report that a man was stabbed and the knife was still in his neck.

Witnesses at the scene told investigators that Rogers was drunk and sleeping on a chair inside the apartment, then woke up and began to accuse Walls of trying to steal his shoes.

Rogers then reportedly stood up and stabbed a "steak-type" knife into the side of Walls' neck, then fled the scene on foot.

Bleeding severely, Walls walked outside and collapsed in the parking lot in front of the apartment.

Police said Walls was unconscious when emergency crews arrived.
