The bodies of two men from the Toronto area who drowned in boating accidents - an 18-year-old from Cobourg and a 56-year-old from Richmond Hill - were recovered on the weekend.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police's underwater search-and-recovery unit found the body of Alex Rutherford, 18, in Rice Lake near Peterborough on Sunday.

It was tangled in weeds about 60 metres from shore, the police said.

Rutherford was camping when he and a friend went canoeing early Saturday. They were not wearing lifejackets.

The canoe capsized. Rutherford's friend managed to cling to the overturned canoe and was rescued by a fisherman.

Peterborough OPP Sgt. Gord Magee said there have been more water-related fatalities in 2006 than usual.

Rutherford's death marks the sixth drowning on Rice Lake this summer.
