A St. Augustine motorcyclist died at Flagler Hospital after a high-speed collision on U.S. 1 Wednesday.

Robert Johnson, 37, was traveling southbound at roughly 100 mph on his 2006-model Suzuki motorcycle in the left lane of U.S. 1 at 6:20 p.m. when he struck the 2005-model Chevrolet Malibu driven by Eddie Rumer, 56, of St. Augustine, the Florida Highway Patrol reported today.

Rumer had pulled into the left hand lane of southbound traffic on U.S. 1 from the private driveway of a residency, located at 6453 U.S. 1 South, and was moving into the left turn lane when his vehicle was struck from behind.

Johnson was thrown from his bike.

"He did have a helmet on," Lt. Bill Leeper, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman, said in a phone interview this morning.

Shortly thereafter, St. Johns County Fire Rescue arrived and requested a helicopter to transport the motorcyclist to Shands Jacksonville.

"The motorcyclist was declared trauma alert and taken to the landing zone," Jeremy Robshaw, SJFR spokesman, said in a phone interview. "From that location that patient was then transported to Flagler Hospital."

Because at that point he was diagnosed as suffering from a cardiac arrest, the helicopter request was canceled and Johnson was transported via ambulance to the nearest hospital.

"He was transported to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine and he died a short time later," Leeper said.

Rumer, who had been wearing a seatbelt, sustained "serious injuries" and was also transported by SJFR to Flagler Hospital, Leeper said.

The crash occurred 52 feet north of Moses Creek Boulevard, he said.
