A Fort Mill mother and daughter died Friday morning after a head-on traffic collision in Gaffney.
Paulette Thomas Toussant, 44, and Veronica Lynne Toussant, 19, were heading south on Interstate 85 when a 1997 Chevy Camaro heading north crossed the median and struck the women's Chevy Malibu head-on, said Lance Cpl. Ron Johnson of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The collision happened about 9 a.m. at mile marker 90 near the Prime Outlets.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler's report stated that the women died from massive body injuries. Paulette Toussant was driving the car and Veronica Toussant was the passenger, the report stated. Veronica Toussant was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Highway Patrol.
Fowler said he was told by a family member that the women were on their way to visit family members in New Orleans. The family was believed to have been displaced from the Gulf Coast to South Carolina after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he said.
The driver and the passenger in the Camaro, who are 18- and 20-year-old brothers from Gaffney, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car, Johnson said. Both men were taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
Johnson said the cause of the crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
There have been 865 fatalities reported on South Carolina roadways so far this year.
