Saint Croix County deputies killed a man they say pointed a loaded shotgun at them Saturday night.

The deadly confrontation took place around 11pm in rural Hammond, Wisconsin.

Police say 22-year-old Jacob Sperl called 911 and made several suicidal threats.

A deputy with eight years experience along with a trainee tried to resolve the situation. But they say Sperl refused to let go of his gun. When he pointed it at the deputies, they opened fire.

St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said everything moved so quickly that the officers didn't have time to engage in a dialouge with him.

After the shooting, investigators found one round in Sperl's gun and another 19 rounds in his pockets.

The deputies involved in the shooting are on standard paid administrative leave.
