Gunfire erupted Thursday evening in a neighborhood just west of Pine Hills Road, leaving a teenager dead in a driveway.

Orange County deputy sheriffs were on the scene to investigate the death of the county's 11th homicide victim, 18-year-old Kenneth Somers.

Witnesses told police Somers was standing in the driveway of the home on Ranchwood Road about 6:15 p.m., when he was approached by a man, said Cpl. Tony Brisinte, a homicide unit supervisor.

The suspect, who witnesses described as being between 18 and 20 years old with long dreadlocks, shot Somers several times before running from the scene north on Ranchwood Road. He had not been caught late Thursday.

Officers were called to the home when someone reported shots being fired and found the teen lying in the driveway. A deputy tried to resuscitate him, but was unsuccessful, Brisinte said. Somers died at the scene.

"This is another senseless crime that happened where a young man lost his life," Brisinte said.

Brisinte said several people witnessed the shooting and it is possible that Somers may have known the killer. Deputies were in the early stages of their investigation and had not determined a motive.

Residents who live in the area said they were startled by the slaying.

Robert Drey, 35, who lives four houses from the crime scene, said the neighborhood is mostly quiet.

"I'm kind of shocked that something like that even happened," Drey said from his front yard. "It's hard to know what's going on in these young folks' minds. It's different than when we grew up."
