Police said three teens were driving along a stretch of Country Club Road in the upper valley early Sunday morning when they crashed.

The collision resulted in other problems for several nearby residents. Police said the driver of a 1999 Dodge Intrepid lost control, causing the vehicle to slide.

"Officers on the west side responded to Country Club on a single vehicle collision, tragically learned that the driver and a front passenger were killed and died at the scene," said information Officer Chris Mears with the El Paso Police Department.

The two killed were 18-year-old Martin Cano and 16-year-old Adrian Navarro of Sunland Park. Investigators say speed and alcohol were involved in the crash. And they say none of the teens were wearing seatbelts. Some residents in the neighborhood say a lack of police presence in the area might let drivers think they can go as fast as they want.

"There''s nobody patrolling. I guess this happened at four in the morning but I mean there''s nobody out there patrolling everybody''s speeding and this had to be speeding that caused this," said upper valley resident Ann Opel.

Police said when the car slid, it severely damaged a cinderblock sign. It also broke an electric pole, which knocked out power. Crews worked on the lines for several hours after the impact. Police said the backseat passenger got hurt, but he was lucky to be alive. That passenger remains in the hospital in stable condition. Residents said it''s a difficult time for the survivors and all of their parents on the holiday weekend.

"It''s a horrible accident, it''s just I mean it''s just awful," said Opel. El Paso electric said about 70 people lost power due to the crash. It took them a little longer to work on the lines because police were still investigating the crash. Power was restored around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
