With the sound of the impact echoing across the campus of nearby Logan Elm High School, Brittney Oberley was killed when her car spun into the front of a nearly-stationary school bus Wednesday morning as school was starting.

The 16-year-old Logan Elm junior and former Little Miss Pumpkin Show was driving a 2004 Ford Mustang north on Zane Trail Road, apparently en route to the school, according to Lt. Pat Vessels, commander of the Circleville post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

As she was rounding a curve to the left and driving down a slight incline "at a speed too great," the vehicle drifted off the right side of the road, according to two witnesses - Logan Elm school bus driver June Vancuren and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Darden who were both headed south on Zane Trail Road.

The Ford apparently was over corrected to the left, and spun out of control when it returned to the paved surface, according to OSP Trooper Patricia Nemeth who is investigating.

Vancuren witnessed the spinning car headed towards the bus, and locked the brakes on the vehicle while driving to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the Ford continued to spin into the front of the bus, which had no passengers, as it was coming to a halt, according to Darden, who was driving to work at the Chillicothe post.

Impact demolished the driver''s side of the recently-acquired Mustang convertible, and damaged the front end of the school bus including the radiator.

Oberley, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead by assistant Pickaway County Coroner Dr. Nancy Alkire. Funeral arrangements are being completed by Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville.

Vancuren was transported to Berger Hospital by the Pickaway Township Fire Department for observation.

This is the 10th traffic fatality in Pickaway County this year, and the second in two days.
