A 24-year-old man shot last month over what police say was an extramarital affair died Monday night from his injuries.

Bruce McKinney was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m. at a Fort Worth hospice, where he''''d recently been transferred.

Jerill Christopher Dorton was arrested shortly after the March 12 shooting at the Meridian Apartments, near Marine Creek Parkway and Northwest Loop 820. Dorton was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with bail set at $40,000.

On Tuesday, the charge was upgraded to murder. Dorton remained in the Tarrant County Jail with bail raised to $500,000.

Glenda Coney-Monroe, McKinney''''s mother, described her son as a loving and caring young man who leaves behind four children, ages 1, 2, 4 and 7.

"Not only do his mother and father hurt, his children hurt from the loss," Coney-Monroe said. "You have children from both sides, even [Dorton]. Now his children are hurt because babies have both lost their fathers."

Coney-Monroe said she hopes younger generations will learn from the tragedy.

"Think before you react, because once you take a life, there''''s no getting it back," Coney-Monroe said. "There''''s no ''''I''''m sorry.'''' There''''s nothing you can say or do. I have no malice in my heart, and I pray that that young man, in taking my son''''s life, gives his life to Jesus Christ."

Dorton, 25, has maintained that he shot McKinney in self-defense.

But homicide Detective Tom Boetcher said inconsistencies in witness statements, evidence and Dorton''''s story lead him to believe that Dorton may have set up the scene to appear as if he had acted in self-defense.

Dorton learned that McKinney had had an affair with Dorton''''s wife, Boetcher said. Dorton believed the affair had ended but learned that on the night before the shooting, McKinney had again called Dorton''''s wife, the detective said.

The next day, Boetcher said, Dorton spotted McKinney at the apartment complex where he sometimes stayed with a girlfriend.

Dorton called McKinney over to his apartment. Inside, the two men exchanged words before Dorton pulled a gun and shot McKinney, Boetcher said. Dorton told investigators that he was only defending himself and that McKinney had shot at him as well, hitting a wall.

But Boetcher said Dorton''''s wife, who had run from the apartment after the first shot was fired, reported that some time elapsed between the two gunshots. In addition, a gun police found next to McKinney did not belong to him but to a neighbor of Dorton''''s. The neighbor told police that the gun had been stolen from her apartment two weeks earlier and that Dorton and his wife had access to her apartment.

Witnesses also told investigators that about two weeks before the shooting, Dorton had threatened McKinney and others with a gun that looked similar to the one stolen from Dorton''''s neighbor.
