A Riverbend High School student was killed yesterday in a two-vehicle wreck in Spotsylvania County, police said.

Jessica Lynn Tate, a 16-year-old Spotsylvania County girl, died at the scene of the wreck near Loriella Park in Spotsylvania, said state police Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

Jessica was a passenger in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am that was driven by a 17-year-old Spotsylvania boy whose name was not released, Tyler said.

The Pontiac was traveling south on Leavells Road when it tried to make a U-turn at the intersection of Salem Station Boulevard near Battlefield Middle School.

Tyler said a 1999 Jeep Cherokee traveling north on Leavells Road hit the Pontiac in the passenger side about 8:35 a.m.

The driver of the Jeep was 22-year-old Spotsylvania woman Stephanie Nicole Stotler, Tyler said. She and the 17-year-old were both taken by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.

Witnesses are asked to call the state police at 800/572-2260.

Spotsylvania sheriffs Capt. Greg Benton said traffic was blocked while police reconstructed the wreck. There is a traffic light at the intersection, and Benton said he doesnt recall any problems there in the past.

Jessica was a member of the chorus at Riverbend, according to her obituary. She had a brother and sister. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday.
