A group of friends canoeing in Nissequogue found a man''s body floating in the marshlands, one of two corpses discovered Tuesday near Suffolk County shores, police said.
The four friends were canoeing in the Nissequogue River around noon when they came across the corpse and called 911, Homicide Squad Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said. A Smithtown bay constable was the first on the scene. He located the body and transported it to the boat ramp off the end of Old Dock Road in Kings Park.
Old Dock Road is where two men are believed to have accidentally driven into the Nissequogue River and drowned on March 15. Ryan Colvin, 25, of Centereach, was found dead a few hours later, but the search continued for Robert Ungerer, 24, also of Centereach and the car''s registered owner. Earlier this month, police said Ungerer would not likely be found until the water temperature rose.
Police said they are open to the possibility that the body may be Ungerer''s. Groneman said it is difficult to tell exactly how long the body had been in the water and there were no obvious signs of trauma.
"He had clothing but it''s weathered," he said. "That''s one of the items we may use to assist in our identification."
Fourth Squad Det. Lt. Robert Edwards said police have received Colvin''s toxicology results from the medical examiner''s office, but the results are being kept confidential and shared only with his family. Police .believe the .incident was an .accident, .Edwards said.
A woman''s body was also recovered yesterday on the North Shore near the bluffs off Seacliff Avenue in Miller Place. The remains were sent to the medical examiner''s office, where an autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the cause of death.
Police said the remains have not been identified and that they did not consider the woman''s death suspicious. No further details were available.
