Stephen J. Johnson calmly reported in a 911 call Tuesday afternoon that a murder-suicide had taken place at his Southwestside home.
Then he apparently killed himself.

"I want to report some bodies," Johnson told the dispatcher in a 911 call released by the Marion County sheriff''s communication office today.

"Some what?" the dispatcher asked.

"Some bodies," he replied, "at 5417 Gambel - G-A-M-B-E-L - Road."

"OK, what''s going on there?" the dispatcher asked.

"Well, it looks like a murder-suicide," he said.

Johnson said he was in the house, and the bodies were in the upstairs bedroom, just past the bathroom, and that they had been shot. He also gave his name and phone number.

Police said the 58-year-old man killed his wife and daughter, then shot himself.

Johnson apparently used his cell phone to call 911 about 4 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount said.

Officers found the bodies of Johnson; his wife, Renee G. Johnson, 49; and their daughter, Rebecca J. Johnson, 14, in an upstairs bedroom of the split-level house.

Stephen Johnson left a suicide note expressing deep despair, Mount said. Police said they would not release details of the note.

Police found the cell phone Stephen Johnson used to make the 911 call in the house, Mount said. Police also found a handgun in the bedroom with the bodies.

Relatives said they knew of nothing that would have led to the shootings.

Stephen Johnson was found on a bed, Mount said. Johnson''s wife was found on the bed next to Johnson, under blankets. The couple''s daughter was found on the bedroom floor. Mother and daughter had been shot in the head, Mount said.

The shootings happened in a residential neighborhood near where Mann Road passes over I-465. A check of police records showed no runs in the past two years to the Gambel Road address.
