A pickup truck crashed into a train early Saturday in rural northwest Indiana, killing three teenagers, authorities said.

Police weren''t sure how fast the truck was traveling or why the driver didn''t see the eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train about 6:40 a.m. It was daylight and there was no fog. The crossing is marked and has a stop sign but no flashing lights or gates.

LaPorte County Deputy Coroner John Sullivan said there was no sign of alcohol but standard toxicology tests would be done.

Passengers Brandon Hughes, 15, and James Zemanek, 14, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Chans Garling, 16, was pronounced dead at a hospital of internal injuries. All three were thrown from the truck, but Sullivan said neither seatbelts nor airbags would have saved them.

"This was a non-survivable-type crash," Sullivan said.

The southbound truck struck the first freight car behind two locomotives, which were going about 59 mph, police said.

Garling was reportedly driving the other teens home after a sleepover Friday night in honor of Zemanek''s 15th birthday Sunday.

"It''s not just a tragedy for the family. It''s a tragedy for the whole school community. The whole community. It''s a shock," Sullivan said.
