A 16-year-old from South Boston died this week while hiking in 110-degree heat during an Outward Bound trip in Utah.

Elisa Santry was taking part in a three week outdoor adventure program that included backpacking, climbing and rafting.

The South Boston teen was hiking on Sunday near Utah''s Canyonlands National Park with a group of seven other students. Outward Bound officials say she lagged behind to wait for another camper. That second teen rejoined the group, but Santry was not with her.

It took searchers five hours to find the 16 year-old''s body in a small side canyon. An autopsy is pending to determine how she died. Outward Bound tells CBS4 that all campers pass a medical screening before the program begins.

After Santry''s death, the remaining week of the course was cancelled and fellow students were sent home after grief counseling.

Santry''s page on myspace.com is filled with messages of condolences from friends.
