Four young Humboldt County residents were killed and two were injured late Friday night when their car went out of control and into Ruth Lake in Trinity County.

The dead were identified by the California Highway Patrol''s Redding office as Stevie Shroyer, 19, of Garberville; Stephanie Hubbard, 20, of Scotia; and Nathan Titus, 21, and Jessica Toste, 23, both of Ferndale.

All four were in a car driven by Cody Baker, 25, of Ferndale. Baker received major head and chest injuries in the accident. A fifth passenger, Zackary Diamond, 27, was treated for minor injured and released, said the CHP.

The 1991 Honda Civic was reported to have been heading northbound at a high rate of speed about 11:50 p.m. Friday on Ruth-Zenia Road, on the west shore of Ruth Lake in southern Trinity County.

Baker apparently lost control on a curve and went over an embankment, the car striking several large trees before going into the lake, coming to rest in four to five feet of water, the CHP reported.

The victims were recovered from the water and taken to the Ruth Lake campground by boat. None of them were reported to have been wearing seat belts.

Baker was arrested, according to the CHP, and an investigation is under way.
