Investigators were back on the scene of the weekend crash that claimed the life of 16-year old Dallas Garrett trying to piece together all the evidence to figure out what caused the crash.

Authorities said the six teenagers were heading home from the Oxygen nightclub, an under 21 club, and in the blink of an eye, Garrett lost his life.

"Given the violence of the collision, the car was moving at a pretty good pace," Sergeant Doug Daza, Venderburgh County Sherrif's Office, said.

Investigators said Garrett was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. The driver, 19-year-old Darin Chamberlain suffered severe leg injuries. Two of the females in the backseat were taken to the hospital with less serious injuries.

Daza said the two other teens fled the scene.

"They're young people, teenagers involved in tramautic accident," Daza said. "I don't think they made the best choice."

The skid marks left a 200 yard trail from the westbound lanes to the eastbound lanes of the road. Investigators said alcohol may have played a role. They are now looking at the possiblity of another vehicle being involved as well.

"If that is determined, that another car is involved, then we'll look at whether either car was doing something wreckless such as racing," Daza said.

In the meantime, family and friends of Garrett have been visiting the accident scene mourning their loss. Garrett is the fifth Reitz High School student to die in an accident this school year.

Chamberlain has taken an alcohol test. Authorities said the final results should take a couple weeks.

Previously: Officials said the car hit the guard rail at 60 mph, killing Dallas Garrett instantly and leaving his friends and family in shock.

The trail of tire marks and the scrapped pieces of metal tell the story. A car carrying six teenagers slammed into the guard rail early Sunday morning.

"You see it all the time, but you would never think it'd be someone that's close to you," Kara Eickhoff, friend of Garrett, said.

Garrett, 16, was thrown from the front seat. The coroner said he was killed instantly. Hours later, Garrett's friends visited the scene.

"Look at this guardrail," Eickhoff said. "You definitely don't think it's a situation where you're going to walk away from it."

Authorities said the car was traveling westbound on Diamond Avenue at speeds of up to 90 mph when it swerved into the eastbound lanes near mile marker 22 making impact at 60 mph.

"The guardrail actually pierced the drivers side door of the vehicle," Chief Deputy Dave Wedding, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, said.

For Reitz High School the accident was especially tragic. In December the school lost three students to a crash on the Lloyd Expressway, and on Wednesday night another Reitz student was found dead in a pond near Burdette Park.

"Its the first time in my 20 years we've ever had one high school that has lost five students in one school year," Annie Groves, Chief Deputy Coroner of Vanderburgh County, said.

Friends of Garrett said they will remember him for the joy he brought.

"He could definitely put a smile on your face, and I know that's something everyone will remember about him," Eickhoff said.

Three of the other teenagers were taken to the hospital where officials said the driver is in the worst condition with serious leg injuries. Authorities said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Previoulsy: A Reitz High School student died after a car accident on Diamond Avenue early Saturday morning.

Officials said Dallas Garrett was ejected from the car after it swerved across Diamond Avenue and hit a guard rail. Officials said six people were in the car, Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene, another passenger was severely injured and the others had minor injuries.

Officials said the evidence at the scene indicated the car was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The official cause of death was open head wounds due to motor vehicle accident.

This is the second Reitz student to die in a weeks time, and the fifth Reitz student that has died this year.
