Two men died and another man was seriously injured early Sunday after their car ran off a rural section of Highway 224 and struck a tree.

Oregon State Police identified the two killed as 24-year-old Vladimir Romashchenke and 19-year-old Vitaliy Maksimenko.

The injured man, 19-year-old Mikhail Tihohod, was taken to Oregon Health and Science University for treatment. His condition was not known.

According to state police, the trio was heading east on the highway in a 1999 Honda Civic when for an unknown reason the driver lost control around a left curve about 30 miles east of Estacada. The Honda drove off the right shoulder and down an embankment before hitting a tree, causing it to fall onto the highway. The Honda eventually came to rest on its passenger side amongst trees and brush, state police said.

A passing driver stopped in the area due to the downed tree and discovered the wrecked car below, state police said.

The driver, Romashchenke, and right front passenger, Maksimenko, were pronounced dead at the scene. Tihohod was sitting in the back seat.
