A CSX freight train struck and killed a pedestrian Friday morning at the Attridge Road crossing in Riga.

The accident occurred at 8:12 a.m. where the train tracks cross Attridge Road near Black Creek Park.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Helfer said the victim was a woman. Her name was not released.

Helfer said the woman was on the tracks at the time of the accident. But further details about the accident were not released. A witness was being interviewed Friday afternoon, Helfer said.

CSX Corp. spokeswoman Jane Covington said the crossing gates were down and the lights were flashing at the time of the accident.

"This particular crossing had active warning devices which appeared to have been working," she said. "CSX is cooperating in every way we can. The investigation will verify that the devices were working properly."

The train was headed to Chicago and included 105 cars pulled by three locomotives. Covington said a train of 150 cars traveling at 30 mph takes three-fourths of a mile to stop.

"By the time a train crew sees a person or a car on the train tracks it's typically too late for them to be able to stop the train," she said.
