A 21-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Denville early Thursday after a car chase that ended when he crashed into an above-ground swimming pool, authorities told The Star-Ledger.
The man was shot in a neighborhood on Franklin Road near Indian Lake, reported The Star-Ledger. It happened after a traffic stop.
The Daily Record of Parsippany reported that Ruben Martinez drove away from the traffic stop, dragging the officer, who then shot the 21-year-old.
Martinez then crashed into an above-ground swimming pool.
He had graduated from Morris Knolls High School in 2005 and had been attending school in Texas.
Franklin Road was closed to traffic between Route 46 and North Shore Road while police investigated the crime scene, reported The Star-Ledger.
The Morris County Prosecutor's Office is holding a 1 p.m. news conference on Thursday to announce the police-initiated shooting and address media.
Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi and Deputy Chief William Schievella will address media in the Freeholders' Public Meeting Room on the fifth floor of the Administration and Records Building on Court Street in Morristown, N.J.
