The plane was reportedly experiencing engine trouble and was approximately three miles west of the Spruce Creek Fly-In at the time and planning an attempted emergency landing at the Fly-In.

At 11:18 a.m., the traffic control tower reported losing contact with the plane. Less than a minute later, residents in the vicinity of Meadow Lane and Halifax Drive reported seeing the plane go down. The craft was in flames when rescuers arrived.

The plane has been identified as a Beech Duchess twin engine based at Jet Park Daytona at Daytona Beach International Airport (DBIA). The tail number is N6017U.

The plane was on a training flight and is believed to have taken off from DBIA.

The victim who was pronounced dead at the scene has been tentatively identified as Daniel Monroe, age 25, of Daytona Beach. Monroe was the flight instructor.

The second victim from today's plane crash, who was a student on-board the training flight, died this afternoon at Halifax Medical Center. He has been identified as Daniel Richman, age 37. Richman was a Canadian citizen who was in the United States on a visa. Investigators are still trying to confirm his home country.
