Two people are dead after a fire at an apartment building in downtown Pikeville.

It happened Tuesday night at the Justice Apartments on Hibbard Street.

Wednesday afternoon, Pike County Deputy Coroner Zeb Hampton said the victims are 41 year old Tammy Renee Lockhart, and her 17 year old son, Justin Alvis Albert Lockhart.

Some teenagers who were in the area told a reporter with WYMT that they saw the smoke and heard a woman yelling for help. They ran to apartment, where the woman told them someone was trapped inside. They tried to help by kicking in a door.

"So I kicked it down, and right when I did that, fire and smoke just shot out," said one of the teens.

It's one of the hardest parts of the job is to deal with a fire death," said a firefighter with the Pikeville Fire Department. "It touches all of us."

Right now, firefighters say they don't know what caused the fire. The investigation is expected to last for days.

No other injuries were reported, but a few firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
