Roff graduate killed in car, train crash
"Randy Mitchell Staff Writer"
Eufaula - Jennifer Gordy, 18, who graduated from Roff High School last year, died after the vehicle she was in was hit by a train Monday in Eufaula.
Joshua Ertle, 17, Eufaula, was also in the vehicle and died when the vehicle pulled into the path of a 93-car train just after 3:30 p.m. Information on who was driving the vehicle was unavailable by press time.
James Barnes, spokesperson for Union Pacific Railroad, said the collision occurred as the driver of the vehicle stopped at the gate, then proceeded to go around. The train was equipped with a video camera.
"We have not reviewed the videotape," said Don Murray, Eufaula police chief. "We will review the tape with Union Pacific personnel. We will be sending an investigating officer the day after tomorrow to view the video."
Murray said the crash happened on Broadway, just behind Eufaula City Hall.
"It took the train about 3,000 feet to get stopped," he said.
