A San Jose man was charged with manslaughter and driving drunk after the CHP said he fled the scene of a weekend car accident that left a teenage girl dead and three other passengers injured.

Aaron Romero, 38, was arrested Saturday, shortly after the crash in a wooded area near Marsh and Felter roads, said Officer Todd Thibodeau, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

He faces charges of manslaughter with gross negligence, DUI causing injury and felony hit and run, said Thibodeau.

The victim was identified as 18-year-old Chrishtiana Acevedo, of San Jose.

According to reports, Romero was behind the wheel of a car traveling south on Marsh Road around 3:50 a.m. Saturday. Acevedo was in the back seat. A 19-year-old woman, and two other men, ages 20 and 21, also were in the vehicle.

The car was moving at 50 to 60 miles per hour when the "driver failed to negotiate a curve," Thibodeau said. The car went off the roadway and eventually rolled down an embankment, coming to rest on its side against a tree, Thibodeau said.

Acevedo was partially ejected. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Romero allegedly ran, leaving his four passengers behind. Acevedo died at the scene. The other passengers suffered minor injuries, Thibodeau said.

It was unclear exactly where and when Romero was later apprehended, nor was his relationship to his passengers released. But Thibodeau confirmed that the suspect submitted to an alcohol test.

Romero remains at the Santa Clara County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
