The body of a missing Bedford County teen has been recovered.

The 15-year-old boy disappeared Friday afternoon while wading with friends in the Duck River.

Officials said the boy, Bryan Leverette, likely walked too far out into the river and drowned.

The Duck River is known to have water swirls which can be very deceiving.

"There have been people [that are] familiar with that river for years and years and years that don't know where those swirls are at. You can be waste deep and then be over your head in seconds, just one step," said Chief David Williams with the Bedford County Sheriff's Department

Investigators said the undercurrent pulled Leverette beneath the water's surface and his friends were not able to save him.

His body was recovered at about 8:30 p.m. Friday near Halls Mill Road after a six-hour search.

Former classmate Brandon Blackburn said Leverette was funny, adventurous and befriended everyone.

"Me and him used to hang out, we used to ride four wheelers, go hunting with him. I was in shock, didn't really know what to think," he said.

Leverette would have been a freshman this year at Community High School.
