Four people were killed when their car collided with a street sweeper parked on the shoulder of Route 55 near interchange 43, police said Friday.

Only a newborn in the silver Honda survived.

John Nordberg, 18, of Pilesgrove; Rhonda Giomo, 17, of West Academy Street, Clayton; Shaheem Hamilton, 23, of Philadelphia; and Matthew Funk, 19, of Pilesgrove were all pronounced dead at area hospitals Thursday night.

Newborn Giavanna Nordberg, of West Academy Street, Clayton, was properly secured in a car seat at the time and survived the wreck.

Nordberg, a one-time wrestler for Delsea Regional High School, had just turned 18 years old on Wednesday. He was heading southbound on the highway at 8 p.m. Thursday when he struck the parked street sweeper, police said.

Darnell Taylor, 29, of Florence Township, was sitting in the street sweeper when it was struck. He was transported by ambulance to Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Washington Township, with head, neck and back pain.

The newborn child was taken to Kennedy Memorial Hospital for evaluation. She had no visible injuries at the time of the accident, said police.

A helicopter was called to the scene as rescue workers tried to save the lives of the four young adults, but by the time it landed all four had died.

As the helicopter idled on the ground, an arriving ambulance narrowly avoided the spinning rotors, said police. One of the blades struck the ambulance's roof but caused only minor damage.

The accident is still under investigation. It is unknown what caused Nordberg to cross to the shoulder of the highway, said police.
