Fort Hood confirmed Wednesday that the 1st Cavalry Division soldier who was run down by the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup early Sunday morning in the parking lot of a Harker Heights nightclub has died.
Spc. Michael Anthony Garren of Staatsburg, N.Y., was a cavalry scout assigned to the division's 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
He died Monday, Fort Hood said, but confirmation of the death was withheld until family members were notified.
Fort Hood gave his age as 20.
Authorities earlier said he was 25.
He joined the Army in November 2006 and had been assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division since March.
Officers found him just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, lying in the parking lot, unconscious and suffering from head trauma, police said Monday.
He was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
Police said Garren was run down after an argument involving several people in the parking lot.
They said the driver of the truck stopped, backed up, hit Garren and knocked the soldier to the ground.
"He then drove forward into the crowd of people and ran over Mr. Garren," police said in a prepared release Monday.
Police are looking for a white Dodge Ram pickup on which a lift kit has been installed.
The driver was described as a white male who was short and heavy.
He was wearing a white T-shirt, red shorts and a red hat, police said.
Another white male and one or two females were also in the truck according to witnesses, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harker Heights Police Department at (254) 953-5400.
