A Starbrick husband and wife have died as a result of a Monday morning fire at their mobile home.

Derrick Dean, 25, and his wife, Ashley, 19, had been listed in critical condition at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, since being flown there on Monday morning.

A nursing supervisor at Mercy Hospital said on Wednesday that Derrick Dean died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and his wife died about one hour later.

The couple lived at 25 Moore Dr., Riverview Estates, in Conewango Township.

A nearby resident reported at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday that the mobile home was on fire and firefighters from Starbrick and three other volunteer departments responded.

Conewango Township Police Chief Jerry Falconer said that the fire apparently started in an air conditioning unit and the home filled with smoke while the couple slept.

Falconer said on Wednesday that there was no indication that the couple awoke.

"Once firefighters were able to get in with breathing apparatus, they found the occupants in the bedroom and were able to slip them out a window to paramedics," said Falconer.

Falconer reiterated that firefighters "did everything they could possibly do."

There was no indication of anything suspicious related to the blaze, which appeared to start near the front of the home, said Falconer. The home was listed as a total loss.

A state police fire marshal was called to try to pinpoint the cause of the fire.

Falconer said he had not heard from the fire marshal as of Wednesday afternoon, but expects to within the next few days.

One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion at the scene and another volunteer sustained an ankle injury.

The McKinney Funeral Home, Youngsville, is in charge of funeral arrangements, which were incomplete.
