An 18-year-old Shasta Lake man was killed late Saturday night when he was struck by a car on Interstate 5 as he wandered in and out of traffic on Interstate 5 south of Lakehead.

The man, whose identity was withheld until relatives are notified, had been drinking and was believed to be under the influence, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The impact occurred at about 11 p.m. when the man stepped into the northbound fast lane north of Gilman Road in front of a car driven by Peter Iverson, 40, of Lakewood, the CHP reported.

Iverson, whose speed was estimated at about 65 mph, hit the younger man, who suffered severe blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.

Iverson was driving on a suspended license, officers said. He suffered minor injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for observation, officers said. His 1991 Lexus sustained major damage.

Two of the freeway's three northbound lanes were closed until early this morning while officers gathered evidence.
