Richard Buck went on a date Friday night before driving up to see his father in Citrus County early Saturday morning.

Buck didn't get far.

While heading north on Dale Mabry Highway, his 2003 Toyota Tacoma was struck by a 1997 Buick headed west on Waters Avenue just after 3 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He died at the scene.

The Buick's driver, Juan Aecca, 31, of Tampa, was driving under the influence when he ran a red light at Dale Mabry before the crash, a highway patrol release said.

The impact ejected Buck, 21, from his car, which overturned and landed upside down in the center of the intersection, the release said. The intersection was shut down for several hours.

Aecca was arrested at the scene, the release said, and charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license and violating a traffic control device.

Aecca was being held Saturday afternoon without bail at the Orient Road Jail, records show.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, the release said.

The victim's grandmother, Myra Buck, 74, said he had lived with her in Clair-Mel City since graduating from Armwood High School in 2004.

"He was good," she said. "I didn't have any trouble out of him at all."

Myra Buck said Richard Buck, whom she called Ricky, apparently was headed to his father's house in Floral City when the accident happened. He often visited his father on weekends, she said.

"He had a date, and he was by himself" when the crash happened, she said. "I think he was going back up to where his dad lived."

Buck worked for Misener Marine Construction for slightly more than a year, entitling him to paid vacation, Myra Buck said.

"He was all excited when he found out he had vacation time," she said. "He was trying to work his way up in the company."
