A 19-year-old Fort Hood soldier died late Wednesday night when the SUV he was driving shot off a highway entrance ramp, crossed four lanes of traffic, ran up a concrete embankment, struck a pillar and rolled.

Jarad Alan Gammill was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero SUV west on the U.S. 190 ramp from Fort Hood Street in Killeen around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said just before entering the highway, the SUV veered across a grassy area and into the westbound lanes, crossed the center median and the two eastbound lanes, ran up a concrete embankment on the south side of 190 below the Pershing Park pedestrian bridge and struck one of the concrete pillars.

The vehicle was forced to the top of the embankment, and then rolled one time to the bottom and landed right side up.

Gammill was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:11 p.m.

An autopsy was ordered.
